Some quacks claimed to be able to solve sexual problems. The most renowned eighteenth-century ‘sex therapist’ was James Graham (1745–94), who lectured and treated patients in his ‘Temple of Health’ in London and promoted his ‘Celestial Bed’, available for hire at £50 per night, as a means of restoring health and vitality, reversing impotence and sterility, and ensuring ‘ecstasy’ as well as conception. The ‘Celestial Bed’ could earn Graham more in one night than most labourers earned in a year.
